Chemotherapy and Exerciseseems to be very debatable for many people.
Fatigue is a problem for patients undergoing cancer treatment, and it can last for months after completion of the treatment. Many people cannot combine chemotherapy and exercise because of the fatigue, while some do.
You should talk to your doctor about combining chemotherapy and exercise. Common sense should prevail. Chemotherapy and exercise should be done moderately and at different times during your treatment. You should try and get some exercise at least 3-4 times per week and not totally think that chemotherapy and exercise cannot be done! The duration of exercise varies from person to person. Start slowly and use common sense. Do not push yourself.
Do not combine chemotherapy and exercise for several hours before having any of your lab tests such as blood tests. Take it easy the day of your chemotherapy. If you combine chemotherapy and exercise you can increase your heart rate, so take it easy the day of your chemotherapy. If you have a fever or infection, wait until you feel better.
Do not combine chemotherapy and exercise without asking your doctor first. He will be able to check your blood counts and if your platelet count is below 50,000 he may suggest you do not combine chemotherapy and exercise until your counts are better.
Common sense should always prevail. Check with your doctor, and a mild exercise routine starting slowly. Chemotherapy and exercise has been known to help many with their fatigue and some reports show that it helps to lessen some effects.
Aaerobic exercise while having chemotherapy has been said to reduces fatigue related to cancer treatment and can improve the psychiatric state of patients.
Tamoxifen is also given in some as an adjuvant therapy in certain patients. Click here to read more about Tamoxifen. NOTE: The chemotherapy protocols on the left are typical adjuvant therapy treatments for breast cancer.
