CEF Chemotherapy is an adjuvant therapy for breast cancer using Cyclophosphamide, Epirubicin and Fluorouracil (5FU).

Before you begin your CEF chemotherapy the doctor may request a Muga Scan to gain a clinical cardiac assessment . CEF chemotherapy is not used for women with serious heart conditions.

Regular blood tests will be required while taking CEF chemotherapy treatment. You should tell your family doctor about your CEF treatment so that any other medications which you may be taking can be assessed. Cyclophosphamide is given in pill form and it is advisable to take this at breakfast time with a glass of water or juice.

Expected Side Effects:

  • Nausea and vomiting - anti nausea drugs will be given at the time of injection and
         you will take anti nausea meds at home while taking the cyclophosphamide pills.
  • Hair Loss - probably fall out 2-4 weeks after CEF chemotherapy treatment begins.
  • Fatigue -usually in the first week after your CEF chemotherpay treatment. The
         fatigue may get worse , with each CEF chemotherapy treatment.
  • Mouth Sores - a few days after your CEF chemotherapy treatment. Mouth sores      can occur on the tongue, gums, the sides of the mouth or in the throat.

    Possible Side Effects:

  • Pain or Tenderness - may occur where the needle was placed when you have      your CEF chemotherapy treatment and it may extend up the arm.
  • Sunburn
  • Burning feeling when urinating
  • Watery Eyes
  • Metallic Taste
  • Weight Gain
  • Joint Pain - after your CEF chemotherapy treatment you may experience pain in
          your joints of the hands, knees and feet.
