Chemotherapy Tip

CAF Chemotherapy is an adjuvant therapy for breast cancer using Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin and Fluorouracil (5FU). CAF chemotherapy may reduce the chance of your breast cancer coming back.

A blood test is required before each CAF chemotherapy treatment. If you visit your dentist or doctor you should tell them about your CAF treatment . Doxorubicin can cause tissue injury if it leaks out of the vein. The nurses are extremely careful but you must let them know if the injection is burning or painful.

Expected Side Effects:

  • Nausea and vomiting - in the first 12-24 hours after your CAF chemotherapy      treatment and usually wears off by day 3-7.
  • Hair Loss - probably fall out 2-4 weeks after CAF chemotherapy treatment begins.
  • Pink/red Urine - due to the doxorubicin in the CAF chemotherapy treatment.
  • Fatigue -usually in the first week after your CAF chemotherpay treatment.

    Possible Side Effects:

  • Mouth Sores - a few days after your CAF chemotherapy treatment. Mouth sores      can occur on the tongue, gums, the sides of the mouth or in the throat.
  • Pain or Tenderness - may occur where the needle was placed when you have      your CAF chemotherapy treatment and it may extend up the arm.
  • Sunburn
  • Watery Eyes
  • Metallic Taste
  • Weight Gain
  • Joint Pain - after your CAF chemotherapy treatment you may experience pain in
your joints of the hands, knees and feet.

Tamoxifen is also given in some as an adjuvant therapy in certain patients. Click here to read more about Tamoxifen.
